Vol. 444 No. 5

Written Answers. - Donegal Speed Limit.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

58 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Environment in view of the fact that Donegal County Council has sought approval for a speed limit zone in the townland of Mullaghduff, Kincasslagh, County Donegal, several years ago, if he will make the necessary order for this.

Proposals for the revision of speed limits in County Donegal, including a specific proposal for the introduction of a 40 mph speed limit at Mullaghduff, were submitted to my Department by Donegal County Council and have been the subject of detailed discussions with the council. The council were subsequently asked to clarify a number of issues but no further submission has since been received from them.

Part V of the Road Traffic Act, 1994 empowers county councils and county borough corporations to make by-laws to apply local speed limits without the need for the approval of the Minister for the Environment. I will commence implementation of that part of the Act as soon as practicable.
