Vol. 444 No. 5

Written Answers. - Galway Road Improvement.

Robert Molloy

Ceist:

64 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for the Environment if a commitment has been made to make a grant available for the repair of the dangerous stretch of road at Moyvilla, Oranmore, County Galway; and if so, when the grant will be made available to the County Council.

As this is a non-national road, responsibility for its improvement and maintenance is a matter for Galway County Council. In the normal way, the cost of any works on the road would fall to be met by the council from its own resources, supplemented by their discretionary grants which, in 1994, amount to £4.525 million.

Under the new scheme of EU co-financed grants for specific improvement works on non-national roads, a grant of £1.610 million for selected projects was allocated to Galway County Council in 1994. No application for a grant for the improvement of the road in question was submitted by Galway County Council under this scheme and no commitment has been made to make such a grant available. It will, however, be open to the council to consider whether to apply in 1995 for a grant for the improvement of this road, taking into account the conditions governing the specific improvement grants scheme.
