Vol. 444 No. 6

Written Answers. - School Transport Grant.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

204 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Education if a grant will be paid to the parents of a person (details supplied) in County Cork.

The Deputy will appreciate that all grant schemes operate within defined, sanctioned limits. However, given the circumstances of this case, I am prepared to consider paying a grant for part, if not all, of the cost of a taxi to bring this pupil to and from school.

The first application for a grant for the pupil in question was received by my Department in mid-January 1994. On 19 January a medical grant for £280, the amount appropriate to the distance of the applicant's home from the school she attends, was sanctioned, with effect from September 1993. It is now understood that this pupil moved to her present school in January 1994.

In the letter of 19 January, it was explained that the grant would be paid at the end of the school-year, on receipt of a certificate of attendance from the school authorities. If the pupil's parent would forward receipts to the transport section of my Department, the application will be considered immediately.
