Vol. 444 No. 6

Written Answers. - Price of Magazines.

Pádraic McCormack

Ceist:

49 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment if his attention has been drawn to concerns about the mark-up on certain magazines on sale in Ireland compared to the price in their country of origin; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

There is no official price control on traders' margins.

In my reply to Dáil Question No. 80, on 14 June 1994, I indicated that pricing arrangements for imported magazines and newspapers may be anti-competitive. I went on to point out that the Competition Amendment Bill, 1994 will provide for public enforcement of competition. The Bill, which was published on 13 June last, proposes to empower the Competition Authority to investigate anti-competitive arrangements including the power to take actions in court.
