Vol. 444 No. 6

Written Answers. - Supports for Indigenous Industry.

Alan M. Dukes

Ceist:

60 Mr. Dukes asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the changes, if any, that have been made in the supports administered by Forbairt available to indigenous industry since the establishment of that body.

Since its establishment on 1 January, 1994, Forbairt has been operating the various forms of support available to industry prior to the setting up of the new agency.

Forbairt has a wide variety of tools with which to assist industry to improve competitiveness. These include its extensive range of innovation, science and technology services, its management support and advisory functions (such as assistance in the introduction of world class manufacturing standards), and of course its ability to assist investment programmes.

I am informed that since its establishment on 1 January, 1994, Forbairt has been taking a critical look at the programmes and services it should provide to indigenous industry and, in this regard, how best to integrate the technological and business functions now combined within the new agency. This process is ongoing.

I understand that a key element of Forbairt's operational strategy will be to meet specific needs of Irish companies by providing the right kind and level of support at each stage in a project's development, whether it is in setting up a business or in expanding in Ireland or on overseas markets.
A key task will be to ensure co-ordinated support from Forbairt and the other development agencies such as ABT and FÁS.
I can assure the Deputy that any proposals from Forbairt for change in the existing range of supports available to it which require the approval of my Department will be considered expeditiously.
