Vol. 444 No. 6

Written Answers. - County Monaghan River Drainage.

James Leonard

Ceist:

86 Mr. Leonard asked the Minister for Finance if it is proposed in the operational programme to include funding for drainage of the Finn/Lackey River in County Monaghan in view of the serious damage through flooding on farm land and road surfaces in the catchment area.

It is not proposed to include funding in the operational programme for the drainage of the Finn-Lackey catchment. EU funds have not been available for arterial drainage works in recent years. It was decided after extensive investigations not to proceed with a drainage scheme for the Finn-Lackey catchment which had been considered as a joint venture with the Department of Agriculture in Northern Ireland. It was found that the engineering options for improving drainage conditions in the catchment did not meet either Government's economic appraisal criteria.
