Vol. 444 No. 6

Written Answers. - Garda Drugs Unit.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

98 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Justice if she will have arrangements made for the establishment of a separate Garda drugs unit in the Bray, Shankill and Enniskerry areas of Dublin and Wicklow.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the divisional drugs unit for the DMA Eastern Division operates from Dún Laoghaire Garda station. This unit operates throughout the division and in recent months has been concentrating its efforts in the Bray-Shankill-Enniskerry areas, with special emphasis on the investigation of suspected drug dealers in the area. Numerous searches have been carried out and six drug dealers from the area have been brought before the courts for breaches of the Misuse of Drugs Acts, 1977 and 1984.

Back-up support is provided to the divisional drugs unit when required by the district detective unit and the local uniformed force. The unit also undertakes joint operations with the central drugs unit based at Harcourt Square.

The Garda authorities consider that the current arrangements in relation to drug law enforcement in the Bray-Shankill-Enniskerry areas are adequate. However, they are keeping these arrangements under continuing review and any changes considered necessary will be made.
