Vol. 444 No. 7

Written Answers. - US Investment in Ireland.

Thomas P. Broughan

Ceist:

50 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment his views on a recent judgment in the US Supreme Court that the State of California is entitled to tax Californian companies on their worldwide earnings in view of the implications for inward US investment in Ireland.

I am advised that the recent decision of the US Supreme Court in the case of Barclays vs Franchise Tax Board of California has no implications under current law for US investment into Ireland. The point at issue was whether the findings of an earlier case dealing with US owned multinationals applied also to foreign owned multinationals.
