Vol. 444 No. 7

Written Answers. - County Galway Bridge Construction.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

60 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for the Environment if he will support the proposal of the Galway rural development group to construct a bridge from Kilbeg to Knockfermoy, County Galway; and if he will provide funds to Galway County Council to lease or purchase this bridge.

As the proposed bridge would connect two regional roads responsibility for it would be a matter for Galway County Council. In the normal way, the cost would fall to be met by the council from its own resources, supplemented by their discretionary grants which, in 1994, amount to £4.525 million.

Under the new scheme of EU co-financed grants for specific improvement works on non-national roads, a grant of £1.610 million for selected projects was allocated to Galway County Council in 1994. No application for a grant in respect of the bridge in question was submitted by Galway County Council under this scheme. It will, however, be open to the council to consider whether to apply in 1995 for a grant in respect of the bridge, taking into account the conditions governing the specific improvement grants scheme.
