Vol. 444 No. 7

Written Answers. - Prison Wardens Recruitment.

Noel Ahern

Ceist:

39 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Finance if he will give details of the recruitment drive for prison wardens commenced in 1993 by the Civil Service Commission including the number called to date, the number sent for medical examination and the number and time scale of future appointments; if all who were successful in the medical will be called; if applicants have been placed on a panel; and when the Commission will be in a position to give accurate information to applicants who completed final interview and medical in early 1994.

The most recent competition held by the Civil Service Commission for appointments to the position of Prison Officer was advertised in the newspapers in September 1993. A total of 5,834 applicants sat the written examination in November 1993 of whom 4,862 achieved the qualifying standard.

To date 679 applicants have been invited for interview. Of these 107 applicants have been recommended for appointment and a further 94 are presently under consideration for appointment. All applicants will be notified of the outcome of their applications.

The question of calling further applicants to the final stages of the process depends on whether further vacancies arise and on the extent to which current vacancies can be filled from amongst those already recommended or under consideration for appointment.
