189 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice the number of persons charged with cruelty to animals during 1993 and up to May 1994; and if she has satisfied herself that the gardaí are dealing effectively with all such reported crimes. [300/94]
I am informed by the Garda authorities that proceedings were taken in respect of 297 offences of animal cruelty in 1993 and that a total of 133 persons were convicted or had orders made against them without conviction during the year. Official figures for 1994 are not yet available.
I am also informed by the Garda authorities that all alleged incidents of such activity are fully investigated by them and are brought to the notice of the Director of Public Prosecutions where appropriate.
