Vol. 445 No. 6

Written Answers. - Recruitment of Driver Testers.

Michael Lowry

Ceist:

249 Mr. Lowry asked the Minister for the Environment the number of appointments made as a result of the recruitment campaign carried out by his Department between September 1993 and May 1994 for the position of driver testers; the number of driver testers due to retire within the next four years; if a panel was formed to fill vacancies as they arise; if so, the number of people placed on the panel; if they were notified accordingly; and if a panel was not formed, the reason therefor. [596/94]

The recruitment of driver testers is carried out by the Civil Service Commissioners. I understand from the Commissioners that a number of candidates were found to be qualified for the post following the recent competition. However, qualified persons are not advised of their position as there can be no assurance that they will be offered appointment. Seven posts are currently being filled and vacancies occurring in the short to medium term will also be filled from this competition. Eleven testers will retire on age grounds in the period ending December 1998.
