Vol. 445 No. 6

Written Answers. - Rental Deposit Board.

Liz McManus

Ceist:

250 Ms McManus asked the Minister for the Environment the plans, if any, he has for the establishment of a rental deposit board to deal with difficulties being experienced by tenants in private rented accommodation. [602/94]

There are no plans for the establishment of such a board. Claims involving rent deposits may be dealt with under the small claims procedure which operates within the District Court structure under the aegis of the Department of Justice. In addition, enforcement by local authorities of the Housing (Rent Books) Regulations, 1993, which require landlords, inter-alia, to supply tenants with rent books and to record in them the amount, purpose and conditions for repayment of deposits paid by tenants, should help to eliminate sources of difficulty in regard to rent deposits.
