252 Ms McManus asked the Minister for the Environment if he intends to introduce measures aimed at reducing car use in cities in view of the problems of growing congestion, air pollution and noise that affect major urban centres; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [644/94]
The Greater Dublin Area is providing the focus for an innovative approach to tackling transportation problems in major urban areas. The final report of the Dublin Transportation Initiative recommends a balanced and integrated transportation strategy designed to provide a rightful, but not a dominant, place for the car in the urban transportation system. The principal proposals made by DTI were endorsed by the Government in the National Development Plan. The Community Support Framework, agreed by the Government and the European Commission, makes provision for substantial EU assistance to implement the main DTI recommendations.
The review of the Cork land use and transportation study, completed in 1992, provides an integrated approach to dealing with transport problems in the greater Cork area and is being implemented with appropriate State and EU support. The problems in the other major urban areas are on a smaller scale.
