Vol. 445 No. 6

Written Answers. - Radon Detection.

Liz McManus

Ceist:

253 Ms McManus asked the Minister for the Environment the plans, if any, he has to establish one authority to have overall responsibility for the problem of radon gas; and if he will introduce grant-aid for people who are affected by contamination of radon. [645/94]

The Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland, a body under the aegis of the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications, is responsible for radon detection and measurement and for the provision of advice on such matters.

Remedial action to deal with unacceptable levels of radon in buildings is a matter primarily for the property owners concerned; the environmental research unit of my Department has published an advisory booklet in this regard.
