Vol. 445 No. 6

Written Answers. - Jet Skis Restriction in Westmeath Lakes.

Willie Penrose

Ceist:

282 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for the Marine if he has considered the submissions made to him by Westmeath County Council and other interested parties in relation to the control and restriction of jetskis and power boats on certain named lakes in Westmeath; if he has made a decision in relation to this matter under the Merchant Shipping Act, 1992, and the regulations thereunder; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [622/94]

The Department is considering the proposals, made by Westmeath County Council under the Merchant Shipping (Jet Skis and Fast Power Boats) Regulations 1992, that certain midland lakes be designated as unsuitable for the operation of jet skis and fast power boats. The very many submissions made by interested parties both for and against the proposals will also be assessed.

My decision in the matter will take full account of the views expressed with the overall objective of ensuring the safe use and enjoyment of the lakes by all concerned.
