It is expected that the EU Transport Operational Programme will be adopted by the end of October 1994.
This programme will set out the detailed allocations and criteria on the basis of which specific port projects proposals will be assessed.
The proposals advanced by Dundalk Harbour Commissioners and other harbour authorities will be addressed within that framework. In this regard, it is hoped to be in a position by the end of this year to set priorities for EU aid over the period 1994 to 1999.
Dundalk is an important regional port with bulk trade of 270,000 tonnes in 1993 principally in grain, coal, peat and gas oil.
This port will continue in this role into the future and its status will be enhanced through the granting to it of commercial semi-State body status under this new harbours legislation.
