Tony Gregory

Ceist:

305 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry his policy regarding the export of young calves to the veal trade in Holland, Italy and France, and the number exported for this purpose in 1993. [369/94]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 304 and 305 together.

The exportation of live animals is a commercial matter subject, of course, to adherence to animal welfare regulations. My policy is to ensure that effective arrangements are in place to ensure that the welfare of animals is adequately protected throughout the export operation.

The numbers of calves exported to Holland, Italy and France in 1993 were as follows:— Holland, 26,481; Italy, 24,990; France, 15,125.
