Vol. 445 No. 6

Written Answers. - Galway Hospital Alzheimers Unit.

Michael P. Kitt

Ceist:

427 Mr. M. Kitt asked the Minister for Health the present position on the provision of an Alzheimers unit in Merlin Park Hospital, Galway. [395/94]

My Department has accepted the view of the Western Health Board that a unit should be provided at Merlin Park regional hospital to provide care for sufferers of dementia who also have behavioural difficulties. There is a considerable capital cost involved in renovating and adapting an existing unit. The provision of the necessary funding will be considered in the context of the Department's capital allocation for 1995 and as soon as the Department's capital budget permits, having regard to the overall priorities of the Western Health Board.
