Vol. 445 No. 6

Written Answers. - School Attendance Legislation.

Jim Mitchell

Ceist:

466 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for Education if she is in a position to indicate the progress in amending legislation proper to school attendance in the Dublin area; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [307/94]

A review of the operation of the School Attendance Act, including an examination of the roles and responsibilities of the various agencies, was recently completed by officers of my Department. I published their report in April, 1994. I propose to make this report a basis for developing my proposals in relation to school attendance. I arranged for copies of the report to be circulated to interested parties, and invited their considered views on the report. I am anxious to have all submissions fully considered by my Department before determining the legislative changes that are required to deal with the complex issues involved. My concern is to effect general legislative change in relation to school attendance. The needs of the Dublin area will be considered within the overall process which is underway.
