Ceist:

502 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Education if she will examine the possibility of paying maintenance grants to third level students attending courses in colleges in Northern Ireland; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [742/94]

My Department currently pays maintenance grants to students attending third level courses in Northern Ireland. Under the terms of the 1994 higher education grants scheme all full-time courses in the State assisted third level university institutions in Northern Ireland which are of a minimum duration of two years at undergraduate level and one year at postgraduate level are approved for grant purposes.

The following list of courses in Northern Ireland colleges are, in addition, approved for third level grant assistance under the vocational educational committees' scholarships scheme, 1994.

Northern Ireland Colleges.

1. North West College of Technology, Derry.

For the following courses:

(i)

HND in Business Studies-Financial Studies/Business Studies with Secretarial Options,

(ii)

HND in Computer Studies,

(iii)

HND in Mechanical-Production Engineering,

(iv)

HND in Electronics and Computing Technology,

(v)

LCC Private Secretaries Certificate (2 Year),

(vi)

LCC Private and Executive Secretarial Diploma (2 Year),

(vii)

RSA Bi-Lingual Secretarial Certificate (2 Year),

(viii)

HND in Building Studies,

(ix)

HND in Civil Engineering,

(x)

HND in Science.
