Vol. 445 No. 6

Written Answers. - Irish Refugee Centre.

Frances Fitzgerald

Ceist:

113 Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will support the setting up in Ireland of a specialised centre to work with refugees who have been traumatised and the victims of torture world-wide. [439/94]

The reception and treatment of refugees in Ireland is the responsibility of the Refugee Agency, a statutory body under the aegis of my Department. The Refugee Agency works with a number of agencies such as the Eastern Health Board to ensure that the needs of the refugees are met. I am satisfied that these arrangements are adequate and do not consider that State funding for such an facility is necessary at present.

In regard to the victims of torture world-wide, my Department makes an annual contribution to the UN Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture. In 1994 this amounted to £20,000 representing an increase of 100 per cent on our 1993 contribution. My Department also contributed £30,000 to the UN Fund for Technical Co-operation in the Field of Human Rights in 1994.
