Vol. 445 No. 6

Written Answers. - Opening of Cross-Border Roads.

Rory O'Hanlon

Ceist:

121 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will ensure that the opening of cross-Border roads is expedited; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [836/94]

The British authorities are fully aware of the importance which the Government attach to ensuring that the problem of closed cross-Border roads is resolved as quickly as possible. In the light of the significant improvement in the security situation the Government believe that there is now a major opportunity for progress in this regard. The Government has therefore welcomed the decisions taken to date to rescind closure orders on 16 Border crossings, and the announcement that a review of all road closures is under way. I have emphasised to the Secretary of State the importance of ensuring that the review is concluded as rapidly as possible and leads to a programme of re-openings in all of the affected areas. The Deputy can be assured that I will continue to monitor closely progress in this area within the framework of the Anglo-Irish Conference.
