Vol. 445 No. 7

Written Answers. - AIDS Statistics.

Paul Bradford

Ceist:

62 Mr. Bradford asked the Minister for Health the total number of persons currently suffering from AIDS or who are HIV-positive; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [977/94]

The number of AIDS cases reported to date in Ireland is 418 and the number of persons who have tested positive for HIV is 1,511. The National AIDS Strategy, which is being implemented through the health services and other areas such as the schools system and the prison service, is designed primarily to prevent the further transmission of HIV and to care for persons infected with the virus. Towards this end, I have allocated £8.4 million during 1993 and 1994 for HIV-AIDS programmes and services and will continue to give the National AIDS Strategy a high priority in my Health Strategy, "Shaping a Healthier Future".
