Vol. 446 No. 6

Written Answers. - Naval Service Resources.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

30 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Defence the total number, make and type of equipment, vessel or aircraft that is provided by the Naval Service to monitor illegal activities in our waters; the proposals, if any, he has to increase and expand this service; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2543/94]

The Naval Service fleet consists of seven all weather patrol vessels. One of these is a helicopter-carrying vessel and an Air Corps Dauphin helicopter is assigned to the vessel as operational circumstances require.

A planned refit and life extension programme for these vessels is in place. This programme, which commenced in January 1994, is being undertaken with EU financial assistance. The refurbishment of one ship has recently been completed and the vessel has resumed patrol duties. The level of resources available to the Naval Service to fulfil its role, which is primarily to provide a fishery protection service, is kept under constant review.
