Vol. 446 No. 6

Written Answers. - Convention on Wetlands.

Avril Doyle

Ceist:

91 Mrs. Doyle asked the Minister for Finance when he will establish a committee to monitor the wise use of our wetlands and wetlands conservations as agreed by the 1975 Ramsar Convention. [2750/94]

The Convention on Wetlands of International Importance especially as Waterfowl Habitat was adopted at Ramsar (Iran) in 1971 and came into effect in 1975. Ireland became a party to the convention in 1984. There is no provision in the convention for the establishment of a committee to monitor the "wise use" of our wetlands and wetlands conservations and I have no plans to establish such a committee.

Use of wetlands is monitored by the National Parks and Wildlife Service of the Office of Public Works on an ongoing basis.
