149 Mr. Sheehan asked the Minister for the Marine the efforts, if any, he has made towards creating an EU funded fisherman's early retirement scheme similar to the EU farm retirement scheme operated at present in this country. [2641/94]

There is at the moment no provision within the EU fisheries framework for an early retirement scheme for fishermen.

I am continuing to press for the introduction of such a provision at Community level. The Council and the Commission have expressed a willingness to examine the possibility of introducing socio-economic measures including a pre-retirement scheme in the context of restructuring the Community fleet.
