Ireland is a party to the Council of Europe Convention on the Transfer for Sentenced Persons but has not, so far, ratified it. It will not be possible to consider the transfer of a prisoner from another jurisdiction to serve his or her sentence in this country until we ratify the convention.
I have directed that priority should be accorded to the drafting of the legislation which is necessary to enable this country to ratify the convention and I hope to be in a position to introduce this legislation in the Oireachtas in the near future.
