Vol. 447 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Garda Statistics.

Frances Fitzgerald

Ceist:

126 Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Justice the number of Garda patrol cars stationed in Harcourt Terrace Garda station, Dublin 2; the number of Gardaí attached to Harcourt Terrace Garda station; the area covered by the station; and the approximate population served by the station. [3177/94]

The Garda authorities inform me that three mobile units are attached to Harcourt Terrace Garda station comprising one patrol car, one motorcycle and one van. The current manpower at the station is 85. The station serves an area of about 1.3 square kilometres and has a population of approximately 3,550.

The Garda authorities are responsible for the detailed allocation of manpower and resources to individual areas. It should be noted, however, that the size and population of an area are but two of a number of factors which are taken into account by the Garda authorities in assessing the policing needs of any particular area. It would be seriously misleading to regard the ratio of gardaí to population in any area as an accurate measure of the level of Garda service provided for that area. The overall deployment of Garda resources is kept under regular review by the Garda authorities and adjustments are made as necessary in the light of changing needs and circumstances.
