I am informed by the Garda authorities that a warrant for the arrest of the alleged culprit in this case has been issued in relation to a number of alleged offences. The Deputy will appreciate that, as this matter is subjudice, I am precluded from making any further comment on the incident.
With regard to the operation of the bail laws, the Law Reform Commission has been requested to examine the options that may be open in order to bring about a change in the law on bail. When the recommendations of the Law Reform Commission are to hand, they will be addressed as a matter of priority.
As regard the general crime position, the Deputy will be aware that I am now implementing a comprehensive and detailed law and order package. The package, which will cost £66 million to implement, amounts to the most concerted and pro-active effort to tackle crime in recent decades. I am confident that the series of measures contained in the package which are designed to help the courts, the prisons and the Garda response to crime, will make an enormous contribution towards tackling crime in a comprehensive and deeprooted manner.
