Vol. 448 No. 6

Written Answers. - New Curricula.

Kathleen Lynch

Ceist:

175 Kathleen Lynch asked the Minister for Education the current progress of the NCCA in introducing new curricula in primary and post-primary schools. [2803/95]

The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA) is currently reviewing all aspects of the primary school curriculum. While the NCCA is making very substantial progress, it is not expected that final recommendations on a revised curriculum will be submitted to me before the end of 1995.

At post-primary level revised syllabuses for the junior certificate have already been introduced. New syllabuses in Technology and Environmental and Social Studies have been devised and introduced. A new programme in Civic, Social and Political Education is being piloted for introduction in all schools from September, 1996 as a core subject in place of Civics.
The senior cycle is being restructured and it will have three orientations: the revised and expanded leaving certificate vocational programme which was introduced on a pilot basis from September, 1994. A further phase of the revised programme will be introduced from September, 1995; the leaving certificate applied programme which is being introduced, on a phased basis, from September, 1995 and the standard leaving certificate programme for which revised syllabuses will be introduced on a phased basis.
It has been decided to introduce revised syllabuses in Accounting, Irish, French, German, Spanish and Italian with effect from September, 1995 for examination in 1997. The introduction of new syllabuses in the remaining leaving certificate subjects will be continued in 1996 and in subsequent years.
