Vol. 448 No. 6

Written Answers. - Court System.

Eric J. Byrne

Ceist:

187 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Justice if her attention has been drawn to comments made late in 1994 by a person (details supplied) describing the courts system as a wholly inadequate and outmoded mechanism for dealing with evictions and other landlord/tenant disputes; if so, her views on these comments; the plans, if any, she has for change in the current system; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [2555/95]

I have noted the comments referred to by the Deputy which, I am sure he will appreciate, raise far-reaching issues which would require detailed examination.

The Deputy may be aware that the comments in question were made on the publication by Threshold of their 1994 report which acknowledged that the small claims procedure had been extended to cover disputes between landlords and tenants in relation to the retention of rental deposits.

Aspects of the landlord and tenant code and related matters are kept under review and any legislative proposals which may emerge will be announced in the normal manner in due course.
