Vol. 448 No. 6

Written Answers. - Beef Premium Schemes.

Noel Davern

Ceist:

205 Mr. Davern asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if it was necessary for a farmer applying for 15 or more livestock units under the beef premium schemes to submit an area aid application for the year 1993 in order to qualify for beef premia payment; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2448/95]

A farmer with 15 livestock units or less as calculated in accordance with the formula set out below did not need to submit an area aid application in 1993 to qualify for special beef or suckler cow premia. He/she needed to submit an area aid application then, however, to qualify for extensification premium.

A farmer with over 15 livestock units similarly calculated needed to submit an area aid application in 1993 to qualify for suckler cow or special beef or extensification premia. The EU, nevertheless, agreed as a special concession that where such a farmer had failed to lodge an area aid application he/she could be paid suckler cow or special beef (but not extensification) premium on any suckler cows or male bovines submitted for premium in 1993 up to a maximum of 15 livestock units.

Calculation of 1993 Livestock Units

First:

Each ewe submitted for 1993 ewe premium = 0.15 livestock unit.

Second:

Each 844 gallons of milk quota held by the farmer at 1 April 1993 = 1.0 livestock unit.

Third:

Each suckler cow submitted for 1993 suckler cow premium = 1.0 livestock unit.

Fourth:

Each male bovine up to 2 years old submitted for 1993 special beef premium = 0.6 livestock unit.

Fifth:

Each male bovine over 2 years old submitted for 1993 special beef premium = 1.0 livestock unit.
