Seán Haughey

Ceist:

141 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Education if she will sanction the appointment of a remedial maths teacher to a school (details supplied) in Dublin 5. [2566/95]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 38, 42, 133 and 141 together.

In keeping with the Government's commitment to increasing access to remedial education, I am currently reviewing needs in this area and considering how best these needs can be addressed within available resources.

The needs of the schools mentioned by the Deputies will be considered in the context of any allocation of remedial posts which is undertaken. I would point out that I allocated an additional 100 remedial teachers to the primary school sector for the 1994-95 school year.

These appointments brought the total number of remedial teachers now in place in the primary sector to 1,133. The service is now available to 64 per cent of primary schools embracing 83 per cent of the pupils in primary education.
