Vol. 448 No. 6

Written Answers. - Social Work Qualifications.

Mary Harney

Ceist:

85 Miss Harney asked the Minister for Health when he intends to nominate members to the committee to oversee the validation of the documents of people who received their training as social workers outside of Ireland, in view of the fact that a chairperson of this committee was appointed in October 1994; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2776/95]

Limerick East): The ad-hoc Committee on Social Work Qualifications reported to the Minister for Health in March, 1994 recommending to him the establishment of a permanent successor to itself in the form of a national validation body. The many functions of the proposed body include provision for the authentication of overseas qualifications.

My Department invited nominations for representation on the national validation body from a wide range of relevant interest groups. A number of difficulties have been encountered in relation to representation and these are now at the point of being resolved. I anticipate that the inaugural meeting of the national validation body will take place in the coming weeks.
