Vol. 449 No. 5

Written Answers. - Loading-Unloading of Loose Cargoes.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

110 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Marine if he intends to introduce ministerial orders or legislation to adequately monitor the loading and unloading of loose cargoes such as animal feeds, foodstuff and coal at all port facilities; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2435/95]

Harbour authorities are required to comply with environmental standards relevant to the business of the port. It is a matter for the port authority in the first instance to ensure that these standards are upheld. I am not aware of any specific requests to the Department of the Marine for the making of orders in relation to cargoes mentioned by the Deputy. If such requests were made they would, of course, be considered on their merits.
