Vol. 449 No. 5

Written Answers. - Dunmore East (Waterford) Fishing Port.

Martin Cullen

Ceist:

27 Mr. Cullen asked the Minister for the Marine if his attention has been drawn to the deplorable state of the Fishing Harbour at Dunmore East, County Waterford; and if he will approve development works at the harbour.[3950/95]

Brendan Kenneally

Ceist:

45 Mr. Kenneally asked the Minister for the Marine when funding will be made available to develop the fishing port at Dunmore East, County Waterford; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1155/95]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 27 and 45 together.

Funding committed to Dunmore East Fishery Harbour Centre this year amounts to about £250,000 under contracts already placed. This money is mainly for the structural renewal of existing berthage, and up to another £750,000 will be needed to complete this work in the future.

I am aware of the need for development at this harbour to relieve the existing congestion of boats which occurs especially during the herring season.

My Department is consulting all the port users with a view to drawing up a preliminary appraisal and estimated cost of what can be done to resolve the problems of this harbour.

However, as I have already noted on a number of occasions, the funds which have been earmarked under the Structural Funds programme for fishery harbour development over the next five years is limited. Unless this constraint can be overcome there will be virtually no scope for major development works at any one fishery harbour.
