Vol. 449 No. 5
40 Mr. M. Smith asked the Minister for the Marine if he will introduce a refurbishment scheme for all fishing boats regardless of age. [3957/95]
Under Ireland's Operational Programme for Fisheries it is anticipated that investment undertaken with assistance under that programme on renewal and modernisation of the fishing fleet during the six year period from 1994 to 1999 will amount to over £30 million. EU aid will be in excess of £9 million.
The operation of this programme is governed by the provisions of the relevant council regulations relating to Structural Funding. In particular, Council Regulation No. 3699/93 lays down the criteria and provisions governing the allocation of Community structural assistance in the fisheries and aquaculture sector. This regulation stipulates that assistance may cover only vessels up to 30 years old except where investments relate to the improvement of working conditions and safety on board vessels. Previously, assistance was limited to vessels up to 25 years old.
