Vol. 449 No. 5

Written Answers. - Quality of £5 Note.

Seán Haughey

Ceist:

61 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Finance if he has satisfied himself with the quality and durability of the five pound note currently in circulation. [4122/95]

I have been advised by the Central Bank, which prints and issues banknotes, that the paper specification for the £5 note is higher than that for the old £5 note and is similar to that of banknotes in other EU countries. The introduction of a smaller sized note was in response to the generally held view that the old notes were too large. The bank also confirms that more than adequate supplies of new £5 notes are available. I would also add that the question of the durability and quality of banknotes is kept under constant review by the Central Bank.
