Vol. 449 No. 8

Written Answers. - Provisional Driving Licence Applicants.

Liam Hyland

Ceist:

89 Mr. Hyland asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the fact that applicants for a provisional driving licence in the category B class must also make a separate application for category W which involves the applicant paying a double fee of £24; and the steps, if any, he will take to correct this anomaly. [4638/95]

An applicant is entitled to a provisional driving licence for both categories B and W on the basis of one application and for one fee. Where an application is made to have an additional category added to an existing licence, no additional fee is normally payable. I understand, however, that some licensing authorities issue, instead, a new licence for the full two year period, for which a fee is payable. I have arranged for an instruction to issue requiring licensing authorities to adopt a uniform procedure under which no additional fee would be payable where an additional category is added to an existing licence for the unexpired period of the licence.
