Vol. 450 No. 1

Written Answers. - Millennium Celebrations.

Tony Killeen

Ceist:

40 Mr. Killeen asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the plans, if any, he has to encourage cultural projects to celebrate the millenium. [2116/95]

Liam Lawlor

Ceist:

64 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the proposals, if any, he has for assisting in the celebrations to welcome the forthcoming new Millennium; if a programme of work is in preparation in his Department; if he will encourage cross-Border co-operation between the various arts, culture and heritage bodies in the celebrations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2763/95]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 40 and 64 together.

I would expect all our national cultural institutions to participate in such celebrations by means of appropriately focused events. There already exists a good working relationship between cultural institutions North and South and it would be my hope that this will lead to co-operation on millennium projects.

I would like to inform the Deputy that in 1993 I made a once-off grant of £10,000 available to an organisation called "2000 Island" which plans to develop and make preparations for Ireland's cultural celebrations of the new millennium. The feasibility study which was undertaken with this grant has been completed and it was my intention in making the grant that it would enable the "2000 Island" organisation to seek the necessary funding for its activities directly from the appropriate State agencies as well as from commercial sponsorship.
