Vol. 452 No. 3

Written Answers. - County Mayo School Bus Service.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

127 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education if she will have arrangements made to investigate the reason the school bus is not utilising the area provided by Rice College, Westport, County Mayo, for the collection of children from Rice College, in view of the fact that it is using the main road as the pickup point, which is dangerous and causing inconvenience to the residents who are mainly elderly people. [8031/95]

As I stated in my reply to the Deputy on 25 April last, discussions on this matter were held between the school authorities, the Garda Síochána and CIE authorities a number of years ago. As a result of these discussions, the most suitable setdown and pick-up points for the school bus were determined. These points have been used ever since, and are still regarded as the safest available.

I am aware that there is an area in Rice College which could be accessed through the main gates of the school. I understand that this area has been examined, but that it has been deemed to be an unsuitable area for the collection of children from the college by school bus.
