Vol. 452 No. 3

Written Answers. - University Libraries.

Michael McDowell

Ceist:

46 Mr. M. McDowell asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the problem of overcrowding in the libraries of our universities where there is not enough seating to accommodate students, including final year students, during the run up to their exams; the steps, if any, she intends to take to rectify this situation; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [7931/95]

High demands on university library reader places are normal occurrences in periods leading up to examinations.

While I am most anxious to ensure that all of our universities are adequately resourced it is important to recognise that university libraries are not designed to provide a dedicated place for every student.

I am aware that a small number of the university libraries are in need of improvement. In this regard, I am very pleased to advise that their needs are at present being addressed by my Department.
