Limerick East): The number of suicides for each of the years 1989 to 1993 inclusive is provided in the following table. The 1994 figure is not yet available.

The factors giving rise to suicide have been the subject of debate for many years. Changes in the fabric of society, depression and social isolation are factors which can contribute to individual distress. My Department recognises the need for further research into these factors and has provided financial support to a number of recent projects in this area.
