Vol. 452 No. 3

Written Answers. - Water Pollution.

Eoin Ryan

Ceist:

93 Mr. E. Ryan asked the Minister for the Environment in relation to fact sheet 3 on fish kills published by ENFO, if the information supplied is available from the year 1992; the steps, if any, he intends to take to publicise this information; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7847/95]

Eoin Ryan

Ceist:

97 Mr. E. Ryan asked the Minister for the Environment the source and authority for the statement contained in his Department's briefing sheet no. 21 entitled Dublin's Water, which states that 80 per cent of all sickness and disease is caused by polluted water and that polluted water kills 20 million people every year; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7887/95]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 93 and 97 together.

While ENFO is a service of my Department, its information sheets are compiled by a variety of authors, including many from outside my Department, and on a wide range of topics.

I am arranging for ENFO to supply the Deputy with information about the link between water pollution and disease. As regards fish kills, the latest statistics, which includes figures to the end of 1994, were published in the Environment Bulletin, issue 25 (February 1995), a copy of which is available in the Oireachtas Library.
