Vol. 454 No. 3

Written Answers. - Rubber Tile Production.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

168 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the potential in Ireland for the manufacture of rubber tiles for use where children are playing: and if his attention has been drawn to the fact that, in the absence of a tyre shredding plant estimated to cost £150,000 to establish, all raw materials for such manufacture must be imported whereas tyre shredding in Ireland would produce employment, particularly for the travelling community. [10757/95]

Forbairt have, in the past 18 months, provided support under the Feasibility Study Grant Programme to a number of entrepreneurs to investigate the feasibility of using recycled rubber. A project for the production of rubber tiles is at an advanced stage of development and Forbairt have indicated that the promoters propose to invest in a tyre shredder if and when there is sufficient volume. Forbairt have also provided support under the programme towards a feasibility study to assess the viability of establishing an independent tyre shredding facility to produce raw material for various uses.
