Vol. 454 No. 3

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

Peadar Clohessy

Ceist:

51 Mr. Clohessy asked the Minister for Social Welfare the number of lone parents in this country now eligible for social welfare payments. [10607/95]

The lone parent's allowance scheme, which was introduced in November 1990, is a social assistance payment for men and women caring for children on their own. This includes unmarried parents, separated spouses, widows and widowers and prisoners' spouses.

At end April 1995 there were 42,236 lone parents in receipt of lone parent's allowance in respect of themselves and their 67,633 dependent children.
