Vol. 454 No. 3

Written Answers. - Waste Disposal.

Noel Dempsey

Ceist:

117 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for the Environment the estimated total cost of destroying all forms of waste in an environmentally friendly manner which would leave no residue of waste material; if grants will be made available for such purposes; and if so, the total amounts to be made available. [10561/95]

There is a wide variety of processes for the treatment or disposal of different types of waste. Many different costs attach to these processes, and the costs can also vary in accordance with circumstances such as location and scale of facility.

The main instrument at national level for supporting investment in waste management will be the solid waste management sub-programme of the Operational Programme for Environmental Services 1994-1999 which will support investment of some £30 million. Support will be at a rate of 50 per cent for private sector projects and will be directed mainly towards facilities for waste recovery generally and specialist facilities to deal with hazardous wastes.
