Vol. 455 No. 1

Written Answers. - Students' Funding.

Tom Moffatt

Ceist:

106 Dr. Moffatt asked the Minister for Education her views on whether postgraduate and research students are adequately funded in Ireland. [11843/95]

Funding for post-graduate and research students is subject to overall financial constraints. Postgraduate students, like undergraduate students, are eligible for tuition fee and maintenance grants, subject to a means test, under the third level student support schemes. Moreover, since 1989-90 an average of about 2000 postgraduate students per annum have received free tuition under the advanced technical skills programme which is funded by my Department with assistance from the European Social Fund.

Funding is also available for research students from Forbairt. In 1994-95 665 Ph D students received funding at a cost of approximately £0.5 million. Also, 105 students with Masters degrees received funding for training in research at a cost of £350,000 with a further £350,000 being provided by industry.
