Ahern asked the Minister for the Environment the international treaties and conventions he intends to sign; the number that have been signed; the number that have been signed but not ratified; the number signed which have been ratified but have not been put into force; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Consideration is being given to the signature of the Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes and of a Protocol, volatile organic compounds, to the Geneva Convention on Long Range Transboundary Air Pollution.
Ireland has ratified 13 treaties, conventions and Protocols on matters within my Department's area of responsibility. Others have been signed and preparatory work for ratification is in train. Details are given in the following table.
